Human–Wildlife Coexistence Program

Driving positive change through environmental stewardship, resilient livelihoods, and inclusive participation that empowers every community to thrive.

Living alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park presents both opportunities and challenges for surrounding communities. Bwindi Women Arise ensures peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife by empowering communities with the knowledge, skills, and sustainable solutions needed to protect Bwindi biodiversity while improving their livelihoods.

Bwindi Women Arise recognises that sustainable livelihoods are essential for effective conservation; we support women with climate-smart agriculture, entrepreneurship, and other income-generating opportunities that reduce dependence on forest resources while strengthening household resilience.

By integrating conservation with community development, Bwindi Women Arise is fostering resilient communities where people and nature thrive together. Our vision is a future where environmental stewardship, sustainable livelihoods, and inclusive participation ensure lasting benefits for both communities and the extraordinary biodiversity of Bwindi.

The program is built on the principle that people and wildlife can coexist when communities are empowered with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities needed to benefit from conservation.

‎Key Focus Areas

1. Human–Wildlife Conflict Prevention and Mitigation: ‎The program supports practical measures that reduce conflicts between communities and wildlife. These include promoting wildlife-friendly barriers, establishing early warning systems, encouraging community monitoring, and working with conservation authorities to respond quickly to wildlife incursions. The goal is to protect both people's livelihoods and the wildlife of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

2. Community Conservation Education and Awareness: ‎Bwindi Women Arise conducts conservation education campaigns to increase understanding of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem protection. Through schools, community meetings, and local leaders, the program raises awareness about wildlife behaviour, conservation laws, and the role of communities in protecting endangered species.

‎3. Sustainable Livelihood Development: ‎The program promotes alternative income-generating activities that reduce dependence on protected forest resources. These include beekeeping, handicrafts, sustainable agriculture, eco-enterprises, and women's savings groups. Improved household incomes reduce pressure on wildlife habitats while strengthening community resilience.

4. Women's Leadership in Conservation: ‎Recognising women as key environmental stewards, the program empowers women to participate in effective conservation decision-making, become stewards of conflict resolution, and natural resource management. Our periodic Leadership training, entrepreneurship support, and community engagement help women become active champions of conservation within their communities.

5. Youth Engagement and Environmental Stewardship: As the futures cadres of transformation, young people are engaged through environmental education, conservation clubs, tree planting initiatives, and volunteer activities. The program nurtures a new generation of conservation leaders who understand the importance of balancing community development with environmental protection.

‎6. Habitat Restoration and Environmental Protection: ‎The program supports tree planting, restoration of degraded landscapes, soil and water conservation, and promotion of climate-smart land management practices. We strongly believe that Healthy Ecosystems provide habitat for wildlife while improving agricultural productivity and resilience to climate change.

‎7. Community Partnerships and Collaborative Conservation: ‎Bwindi Women Arise works closely with local communities, government agencies, conservation organizations, and tourism stakeholders to develop shared solutions to conservation challenges. These robustic principles of partnerships strengthen trust, improve coordination, and ensure that conservation initiatives respond to local needs.
