Our Women Economic Empowerment Programme is designed to support women and adolescent girls living in communities neighbouring Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by expanding access to vocational skills, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. The programme responds to the unique socioeconomic realities faced by women whose livelihoods have historically depended on Bwindi subsistence agriculture and natural resources, often placing them at the frontline of poverty, environmental degradation, and human-wildlife conflict.

Women in the Bwindi landscape continue to play a central role in household welfare, agricultural production, childcare, and community development. Yet their contributions are frequently constrained by structural barriers that limit their economic participation. Limited access to quality education, vocational training, productive assets, financial services, technology, land ownership, and competitive markets continues to undermine women's capacity to realise their full economic potential. These challenges are further compounded by climate change, declining agricultural productivity, and recurring crop losses resulting from wildlife incursions from the protected forest.

Bwindi Women Arise addresses these challenges through an integrated, community-centred approach that equips women with practical competencies while strengthening their confidence, leadership, and economic independence. Rather than providing temporary relief, we invest in long-term solutions that enable women to establish resilient livelihoods, diversify household income, build financial security, and reduce vulnerability to economic shocks.

Our approach is grounded in the conviction that sustainable economic empowerment extends beyond income generation. It requires creating an enabling environment in which women have equitable access to skills development, financial resources, productive opportunities, markets, and supportive community networks. By combining technical training with entrepreneurship development, financial literacy, savings mobilisation, and sourcing for local and international market linkages, we help women transition from economic vulnerability to sustainable self-reliance.

Key Focus Areas

Vocational Skills Development: Vocational education remains one of the most effective pathways for expanding employment opportunities and promoting economic independence. Our programme provides practical, market-oriented training that enables women and girls to acquire professional skills aligned with local and regional market demand. Participants receive hands-on training in tailoring and garment production, hairdressing and beauty services, basket weaving, jewellery making, handicrafts, and other income-generating trades. These vocational skills enable our target beneficiaries to establish microenterprises, secure employment, or provide services within their communities. Beyond technical proficiency, participants develop confidence, creativity, discipline, and problem-solving abilities that strengthen their long-term income creation.

Entrepreneurship and Business Development: Developing technical skills alone is insufficient without the capacity to manage and expand sustainable enterprises. For this reason, entrepreneurship development forms a central pillar of our programme. Women receive comprehensive training in business planning, enterprise management, customer relations, marketing, pricing strategies, inventory management, financial record keeping, and business growth planning. Participants are supported to identify viable business opportunities based on local market demand, prepare business plans, and adopt sound management practices that improve productivity and profitability.

Village Savings and Loan Associations: Access to affordable financial services remains one of the greatest obstacles facing rural women. Conventional financial institutions often remain inaccessible due to limited collateral, high borrowing costs, and geographical constraints. To bridge this gap, Bwindi Women Arise supports the establishment and strengthening of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). These community-based savings groups create safe and reliable platforms through which women save regularly, access affordable credit, invest in productive local enterprises, manage household financial emergencies, and build household assets.

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security: Although many women are diversifying into non-agricultural livelihoods, agriculture continues to play a critical role in household food security and rural incomes. Our programme therefore promotes environmentally sustainable agricultural practices that improve productivity while reducing pressure on protected ecosystems. Women receive training in community-based climate-smart agriculture, mushroom cultivation, kitchen gardening, vegetable production, composting, soil conservation, and other sustainable farming practices suited to local conditions. These interventions improve household nutrition, diversify income sources, and strengthen resilience to climate variability while encouraging responsible management of natural resources.

Impact Assessment Tool -Women Economic Empowerment

Today, we work closely with nearly 50 households, supporting women to strengthen their financial literacy, develop entrepreneurial skills, and improve household incomes. One of this programme's key pillars is the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), where members meet weekly to save together, access affordable loans, share experiences, and support one another's economic growth. Beyond participating in savings groups, many of these women have established successful income-generating enterprises. Some have become skilled tailors, while others produce and supply handcrafted products, including baskets, jewellery, and other locally made crafts. These businesses provide reliable sources of income, enabling women to support their families, invest in their children's education, improve household nutrition, and build greater financial security.
